Issue #50: Bionic Analysis for Growth Marketing

Good morning.

In 2023, I gave the same talk to 7 different groups, with some minor adjustments for each.

The core focus was on what I call Bionic Analysis, which is an AI methodology for uncovering often hidden opportunities in your marketing and business.

That is, using a combination of your mind, imagination, and AI to find opportunities for increasing growth, revenue, conversions—whatever you need.

I’ve collected my notes from this talk and have compiled them into an easy overview that will hopefully help you see what’s possible and act on some of these ideas. There are adjacent topics that go with Bionic Analysis, as you’ll see (like Triads and Tempo Testing).

Over the next few years, Bionic Analysis will become crucial for uncovering hidden opportunities. Although the talk is from 2023, everything is still valid and still works. In fact, a few past clients I spoke with last week are still using this methodology and seeing great results.

Today's AI systems can:

  • Generate text, images, audio, and video (to a degree) indistinguishable from human-made equivalents

  • Clone voices with perfect accuracy (able to fool even close family members)

  • Generate videos featuring highly convincing human replicas

  • Create autonomous bots that can complete complex task sequences

The technology has reached several critical milestones:

  • Text Detection: Tools claiming to detect AI-written content are becoming ineffective

  • Image Authentication: AI-generated images are becoming impossible to distinguish from real photos

  • Voice Cloning: Systems can maintain perfect mimicry through extended conversations

  • Video Generation: AI can create videos featuring realistic human replicas

  • Content Automation: Systems can generate entire marketing campaigns from a single prompt

Current AI systems can:

  • Create full campaign materials including ads, emails, and landing pages

  • Generate multiple image variations more efficiently than photo shoots

  • Produce conversion-optimized copy that consistently performs well

  • Operate autonomously through auto-GPTs to complete complex tasks

  • Create and manage entire marketing funnels

Performance Metrics

  • Robot-generated copy wins 7 out of 10 tests against human-written content

  • AI-generated images perform equally well compared to professional photography

  • Voice cloning can maintain authenticity through 30+ minute conversations

Beyond Tools: A Fundamental Transformation

The common refrain that "AI is just another tool" significantly understates its transformative impact on human society and business operations.

Current reality:

  • Public AI tools are heavily filtered versions of their full capabilities

  • Major tech companies possess more advanced systems than what's publicly available

  • Unfiltered versions of models like GPT-4o and o1 demonstrate unprecedented capabilities

  • The technology is fundamentally transforming human nature and interaction

Advanced AI systems can:

  • Predict and understand human behavior patterns

  • Make connections that humans typically miss

  • Process and analyze vast amounts of data in real-time

  • Generate creative solutions autonomously

  • Adapt and learn from interactions

Modern AI systems can:

  • Create their own code through natural language instructions

  • Set up and manage complete marketing campaigns

  • Analyze and optimize performance automatically

  • Generate and test multiple variants simultaneously

  • Operate with minimal human oversight

The transformation is affecting:

  • Traditional marketing roles and team structures

  • Business optimization and testing methodologies

Implementing Bionic Analysis

Bionic Analysis is a systematic approach to finding hidden opportunities through the integration of AI tools and human insight. 

The implementation process involves several key components that work together to create a comprehensive analysis system.

Signal Detection

Signal detection is the foundation and most crucial component of Bionic Analysis. It involves detecting signals within your business network that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Data Collection

Gather comprehensive data from multiple sources:

  • Customer data and behavioral patterns

  • Support and sales call transcripts

  • Competitor marketing materials and messaging

  • Market category reviews

  • Product reviews (both yours and competitors')

  • Social media conversations

  • Customer feedback and complaints

  • Sales page content

  • Email campaigns

  • Ad copy and performance data

Analysis Tools and Methods

For analysis, GPT-4o, o1, or Claude 3.5 Sonnet:

  • It's less eager to please

  • Provides more nuanced analysis

  • Can be challenged and will revise its analysis

  • Offers more depth in pattern recognition

Analysis Categories

Using specific prompts with ChatGPT, analyze:

Implementation Process

The process of creating specialized Agent/GPTs has become significantly more accessible:

  2. Fine-Tuning

    • Use existing open-source foundation models

    • Fine-tune with your specific data

  • Cost has reduced from hundreds of thousands to manageable amounts

Implementation Tips

  1. Start with Signal Detection:

    • Begin with existing data

    • Use browse.ai or similar tools for data scraping

    • Break large texts into manageable chunks

    • Combine with appropriate prompts

  2. Use Prompt Engineering:

    • Create specific prompts for each analysis type

    • Test and refine prompts for better results

    • Keep prompt libraries for different purposes

    • Update prompts based on results

  3. Build Gradually:

    • Start with one specialized Agent/GPT

    • Test and refine before expanding

    • Add capabilities based on needs

    • Maintain focus on core business objectives

  4. Monitor and Adjust:

    • Track Agent/GPT performance

    • Refine training data

    • Update models as needed

    • Maintain quality control

The implementation of Bionic Analysis should be viewed as an ongoing process rather than a one-time setup. 

The system should grow and evolve with your business, continuously incorporating new data and insights while refining existing capabilities.

Advanced Testing Methodologies

The Triad Approach

Instead of traditional A/B testing, implement a triad system:

  • Run three versions simultaneously

  • Evaluate by individual and group conversion rates

  • Never stop testing

  • Replace underperforming variants based on economic indicators

The triad might include:

  • Control version following standard formulas

  • Variant A focusing on negative aspects

  • Variant B focusing on positive aspects

Effectiveness Half-Life

Calculate the effectiveness half-life of your marketing materials using the formula: T = ln(2)/C where C represents timing before performance decline.

This calculation helps determine optimal timing for content updates and variations, ensuring maximum effectiveness of your marketing materials.

Fractal Pattern Analysis

Use fractal patterns like the Koch snowflake to:

  • Expand and reduce messaging in structured patterns

  • Create emotional journeys in content

  • Develop more effective marketing messages

This approach has consistently outperformed control versions across thousands of tests, with improvements ranging from 10% to 400%.

Tempo Testing and Analysis Framework

Transform your testing methodology:

  • Implement the triad testing approach instead of traditional A/B testing

  • Create continuous testing cycles rather than finite experiments

  • Focus on economic indicators over statistical significance

  • Calculate and monitor effectiveness half-life of marketing materials

  • Implement fractal pattern analysis for content creation

Data Collection and Analysis

Establish comprehensive data gathering systems:

  • Set up automated data collection from all customer touchpoints

  • Implement tools for competitor analysis and market monitoring

  • Create systems for continuous feedback collection

  • Develop processes for converting raw data into actionable insights

  • Build frameworks for pattern recognition and analysis

At some point, I might run a small workshop on implementing Bionic Analysis, Triads, and Tempo Testing.
